像素碰 Pixel Pung — Hong Kong Mahjong (香港麻雀)

Hong Kong Mahjong · 香港麻雀

配器 Melody instrument

Every voice below plays the same note and the same phrase — the opening statement, 起 — so the only difference you hear is the instrument itself. Background music is paused while this is open. Pick one and it plays the theme from the next phrase onward and every hand after that; the choice is remembered. Or take 混合 Mix it up at the bottom, which hands each phrase to a different one.

The game has seven tunes, one for each moment at the table. Choose which of them the phrase comes from below — a voice that suits the hand does not always suit 聽牌 One Away, which is written in a different mode altogether, or 結算 The Settlement, which is slower than the rest.

How to play HK Old Style · 香港舊章

Your goal 4 sets + 1 pair 14 tiles. A set is three-in-a-row of one suit, or three identical tiles.
Your turn Draw one, throw one Click a tile to pick it up, click it again to throw it. That is the whole turn.
The catch 3 faan minimum Finishing is not enough — the hand must be interesting enough too. Worth reading twice. On the 入門Learner's table this catch is switched off.

1The tiles

Three suits

Numbered 1–9, four copies of each. Only these form runs.

  • Characters
  • Dots (circles)
  • Bamboo (sticks)
Honours

No numbers, and they never form runs — triplets only.

  • Winds 東南西北 — East, South, West, North
  • Dragons 中發白 — Red, Green, White
Bonus tiles

Eight, one copy each. These never sit in your hand — see step 5.

  • Flowers 梅蘭菊竹 — plum, orchid, chrysanthemum, bamboo
  • Seasons 春夏秋冬 — spring, summer, autumn, winter

Each is numbered 1–4, printed in the tile's corner — Chinese numerals on the flowers, Arabic on the seasons. The number is the whole rule: 正花 pays 1 faan only when it matches your seat, 1 East, 2 South, 3 West, 4 North. Your seat changes every hand, so the same tile is worth a faan one hand and nothing the next.

2Starting a hand

Two dice decide who is banker. Count the total round the table from your own seat as 1 — that seat deals, holds a 14th tile and throws first. Everyone else holds 13.

When the wall runs out with nobody finished, the hand is a draw 流局 and nobody pays.

Counting two dice around four seats is not perfectly even — 11 totals do not divide by 4 — so the opening banker lands on 西West about 28% of the time and on East about 22%. It washes out: the seat moves on every hand the banker fails to win.

3Your turn

Draw a tile, then throw one away face up. Play moves to your right, 東 → 南 → 西 → 北East → South → West → North, unless somebody claims the tile you threw.

There is no clock unless you ask for one. Set a decision time on the start menu or in ⚙ Settings and the game will throw for you when it runs out.

4Claiming somebody's discard

Any thrown tile is fair game if it completes a set for you. Claiming is optional, and it costs you something: the set goes face up for everyone to read, and several big hands require staying concealed.

ChowA run of three, e.g. 4筒5筒6筒4-5-6 Dots Only from the player before you
PungThree identical tiles From anyone
KongAll four identical — you draw a replacement after From anyone
食糊 WinIt completes your hand From anyone

Two people want it? Winning beats pung/kong, which beats chow. If two could both win on it, whoever sits nearest the thrower takes it.

搶槓 robbing the kong: if somebody upgrades an exposed pung to a kong and that tile would complete your hand, you may snatch it.

5Bonus tiles

Draw a flower or animal and it does not join your hand — it is set aside at once and you draw again. Free scoring, but only if it matches your seat: the first belongs to East, the second to South, and so on.

Somebody else's bonus tile is worth nothing to you, and it also spoils 無花No Bonus Tiles — the small bonus for finishing with none at all.

6Winning, and the faan minimum

A finished hand is four sets plus a pair — but you cannot simply declare it. In Hong Kong scoring it must also be worth a minimum number of faan. You are playing 舊章 Old Style, so yours is 3 faan — change it under Table in the New Game menu.

入門LearnerLearner's Table — every legal hand wins, even one worth no faan0
新章NewNew Style — a real bar, low enough to clear2
舊章OldOld Style — the authentic Hong Kong minimum3

The minimum is what gives HK mahjong its ambition, and it is also the hardest thing about starting: at 舊章Old Style roughly a quarter of hands end in a draw 流局 with nobody allowed to win. Begin at 入門Learner's Table, where a complete hand is never refused, and raise it when refusals stop feeling arbitrary.

Faan are doubles, earned for how the hand is built, not for the fact that it is built:

門前清Fully ConcealedNever claimed a discard all hand1
自摸Self-DrawYou drew the winning tile yourself1
平糊All ChowsAll four sets are runs1
對對糊All PungsAll four sets are triplets3
混一色Half FlushOne suit plus honours3
清一色Full FlushOne suit and nothing else7

At 舊章Old Style a plain hand of four runs and a pair usually is not enough, and the Win button will not appear. That is what makes HK mahjong a game of ambition rather than speed — you have to aim at something. At 入門Learner's Table it is always enough, which is the point of starting there: you learn what a finished hand looks like first, and what it is worth second.

Open the Hand panel from the toolbar and it will tell you how far from a win you are, and what the hand is worth.

Counting a hand, one row at a time

Faan are added up, not chosen. You look at the finished hand and take every rule that applies to it — most hands collect two or three. Here is a real one, counted the way the table counts it:

東東東East · East · East a pung of the round wind — the round is East +1 圈風Round Wind
六萬六萬六萬6·6·6 Characters an ordinary pung — worth nothing on its own 0
一索二索三索1·2·3 Bamboo an ordinary chow — worth nothing on its own 0
一萬一萬一萬1·1·1 Characters terminals, but a pung of them alone scores nothing 0
六筒六筒6·6 Dots the pair. Pairs never score 0
自摸Self-draw you drew the winning tile rather than taking a discard +1 自摸Self-Draw
Total two rows scored; everything else was structure 2 faan

Two faan. At 舊章 Old Style that hand cannot be declared — it is one short — even though it is finished and legal. That is the single hardest thing to accept when you start, and it is why the panel in the corner counts along with you.

Three ways that same hand would have cleared 3 faan: sit East as well (門風 Seat Wind, +1) · make the bamboo a pung instead of a chow (對對糊 All Pungs, +3) · hold a bonus tile matching your seat (正花 Own Flower, +1).

Two habits worth forming early. Honours are where cheap faan live — a pung of dragons, of the round wind, or of your own seat wind is a faan each, and they cost you nothing but the discipline to keep the pair when you draw the second one. One suit is where the big faan live — a hand entirely in one suit is 7, and half a hand already in one suit is worth committing to.

7Getting paid

More faan pays much more, not a little more — and this is the real Hong Kong 計番表, chip for chip:

faan出銃 off a discard自摸 self-drawneach pays
18124
216248
3324816
4649632
59614448
612819264
719228896
8256384128
9384576192
10512768256
Rungs below your table's minimum are never charged.
  • 自摸 Self-draw pays half again as much — all three opponents pay, and each pays double the plain share. That is why the middle column is 1.5× the left one. Self-draw is also worth a faan of its own, so drawing your own winning tile is worth roughly three times the same hand taken off a throw.
  • Won off a discard — with discarder-pays-all on (the default) the thrower pays the whole amount alone; with it off they pay double and the other two pay half each. Either way the winner collects the same.
  • The banker pays and collects double.
  • 連莊 Banker streak — every consecutive hand the banker keeps the seat adds 1 faan to the stakes for everybody, up to 6. It is charged at payout, so it never helps a hand reach the minimum.

A game is four dealerships — one East round. It ends early if any seat runs out of chips.

Coming from the international (MCR) rules?

That system scores 81 named hands in points with an 8-point minimum. Hong Kong scores faan — doubles — with a 3 faan minimum at Old Style and a 10 faan ceiling. This table also plays bonus tiles as seat-matched rather than a flat point each. Everything else — the tiles, chow/pung/kong, claim priority, the wall, the rounds — is the same game.
